2. PDF TIPS AND ADVICE

PDF Files and font rendering - When you create a PDF file from some applications you may have the option to ensure that all fonts used in your document are embedded within the file. This will ensure that it looks correct across different tech platforms and operating system versions. If your PDF is created with some fonts not embedded then it is possible that the text may not look correct, or worse still, that it will not be represented by a matching font at all - for example this is a common issue with some symbol fonts.
PDF files for distribution via our services should be as "standard" as possible - i.e. no special embedded features or media, PDF 1.6 standard or earlier (Adobe reader 7 compatible), and as small as possible for screen display, to ensure fast and reliable downloads and the fastest display on all devices.

3. ZIPPED CATALOGS

All current versions of Javelin support built-in and downloadable catalog files. These files are xml files that include links to the location of drmz files and cover image files. A zipped version of the file download can be provided that includes both the xml file and a sub-directory containing the cover images. Now these special zip format files can be refreshed with the zip file as the file to re-download rather than just the xml catalog file. This means that catalogs AND the cover images can be refreshed in one go, so that new entries and their cover images are downloaded when user select to refresh a catalog. A test example is available for publishers - please feel free to ask us for advice on using this facility.
